Role Description
Onsite roles for both part-time and full-time coaches in all three Olympic-style weapons are desired. Forge Fencing is located in Durham, North Carolina. The full-time coach will be responsible for developing and implementing dynamic training programs, providing elite one-on-one and group instruction, and mentoring athletes across various age groups and skill levels. Part-time coaches will be supporting weapon leaders by giving group and 1:1 instruction.
The coach will actively evaluate and track athlete progress, focus on advanced technical and tactical skill development, and strip-coach athletes during competitions. Additional responsibilities include fostering a positive, safe, and motivating training environment that aligns with Forge Fencing’s core values: integrity, community, accountability, resilience and perseverance.
Focus Area: We are specifically seeking a dedicated saber specialist who can help sustain and grow our weapon-specific programming who works to develop top-tier regional and national athletes in the saber discipline.
Qualifications
Fencing Expertise: Deep technical and tactical knowledge of modern saber fencing (specialist expertise required).
Instructional Experience: It is ideal to have coaching experience, but elite fencing experience can act as a supplement. We train and support coaches at all developmental levels.
Mentorship Skills: Strong ability to mentor youth and competitive athletes, building confidence, resilience, and sportsmanship.
Communication: Excellent interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills to effectively collaborate with parents, athletes, and staff.
Culture Fit: A strong commitment to fostering an inclusive, supportive, and highly motivating training environment.
Athlete Tracking: Ability to systematically evaluate, track, and provide constructive feedback on athlete progress to parents and between coaches and athletes comfortably.
Competitive Background: Previous coaching experience within a competitive fencing framework, including familiarity with USA Fencing structures and tournaments.

Compensation
Experience-Based: Full-time is a hybrid of a base salary + individual lesson + additional incentive based compensation.
Part-time: Hourly-rate based on experience, above Durham’s Living Wage.
