The Big Blue is Back!

  • by

With excitement, Forge Fencing announces the return of the Big Blue, a local USA Fencing-sanctioned open event for all Olympic fencing weapons and Y-12 events for youth fencers.  The Big Blue was established in 2008 and was last hosted by Mid-South Fencers’ Club in September of 2019

This event coincides with the official launch of the first full season for Forge Fencing Academy and Club.  Forge began operation at 610 N. Duke Street in Durham, NC on February 14th, 2022.

Big Blue 2017

Registration for this year’s BIG BLUE opened on AskFRED.net in late May. Already registrations include fencers representing 17 different regional clubs, mostly from North Carolina.

What’s New?

The 2022 tournament adds Youth-12 foil and epee events to the competition schedule. The Big Blue now has Senior Open events for foil, epee, and saber, separated by gender, as well as mixed gender Y12 events in saber, foil, and epee. These are all open for registration by members of USA Fencing.

On Saturday, food truck Baton Rouge Cuisine is scheduled to serve up some tasty food for hungry fencers.

Registration for all events closes August 26th. Please review the USA Fencing age chart since eligibility shifts for some beginning August 1st.  All participants must be USA Fencing members in order to participate.

Zach Brown won the saber event in 2018. Zach is scheduled to work the 2022 event as a referee alongside his friends Chris Cheney, Bobby Gibbs and Andrew Foster.

Forge Fencing continues to follow USA Fencing guidelines for tournament safety as we return to fencing as safely as possible. Here is our Covid Response for returning to fencing after exposure.

Matthew Chaves won the Big Blue Youth Saber event in 2017. He is now fencing to win in the Open Saber men’s open event this season.

Thank you for supporting local!  We thank you for REGISTERING EARLY and helping us plan for a successful event!
