This past weekend we kicked off the Priority on Youth Tournament Series with our largest season opener ever - and what a launch it was! Fifty young fencers from six clubs across North Carolina came together at Forge Fencing to compete in Youth Foil and Saber events. The energy in the room was electric, the bouts were spirited, and the sense of support among athletes, families, and clubs set the tone for an incredible season ahead.

A Tradition of Growth & Opportunity

Priority on Youth is the longest-running youth fencing developmental tournament series in North Carolina, and each year it serves as a foundation for young athletes to compete, learn, and grow. Across the five-event season, fencers earn points for participation and placement. Those who compete in four out of the five events qualify for a prize from our legendary end-of-year prize table - a longtime favorite that motivates these athletes.

The enthusiasm at this opening event shows just how much the series continues to flourish. The next generation of fencers is taking root, and we couldn’t be more excited to help them grow.

Community, Competition, and the Joy of Learning

What stood out most on the strip wasn’t just the athleticism - it was the positivity. Athletes cheered each other on, offered high-fives after tough bouts, and showed the kind of sportsmanship we strive to cultivate. For many, POY events are their first competitive experience, and the supportive environment makes all the difference. These developmental tournaments are where confidence is built, friendships are formed, and future champions begin their journey.

Teen Leaders Shine Bright

One of the biggest highlights of the day was the exceptional work of the Forge Teen Leaders. This talented group of emerging leaders stepped into crucial roles throughout the event - running logistics, officiating bouts, coaching developing fencers, and offering mentorship at every turn.

Their presence transformed the experience. Younger athletes lit up as they connected with the teens who were once in their shoes, modeling not only fencing skill but leadership, empathy, and community spirit. The impact of that mentorship was visible all day long and is a powerful reminder of why youth development is at the heart of everything we do at Forge.

Looking Ahead

If POY #1 is any indication, this season is going to be one of the best yet. We’re thrilled to welcome new faces, cheer on returning athletes, and continue building a supportive community where young fencers can thrive.

Thank you to the athletes, parents, coaches, volunteers, clubs, and especially our incredible Teen Leaders for making this season launch unforgettable.

Our next event is Sunday, January 25th, and registration is OPEN!
